Unfortunately, John Nash had problems deciphering the difference between reality and hallucinations. The struggle John faces with his illness is arduous but true to life. These environmental factors should be worked out by professionals for maximum recovery. Though my experiences with mental illness have been minute, this film has helped me gain a better understanding of what life may be like for those afflicted and those who love them. Movies like A Beautiful Mind create and amplify many ethical concerns relating to the portrayal of mental illnesses and how society views them. Interestingly, something that is particularly significant about the treatment of mental illness within the film is that John, by the end of the narrative, instead of experiencing a triumphant victory over schizophrenia, has learned to cope with his afflictions in a way that allows him to function as best he can. Of course, his hard work eventually lead him to attain his objectives, but the stressful environment it created likely also triggered his schizophrenic tendencies. At the opening reception, he meets a group of math and science graduate students, there names were Richard Sol, Ainsley, and Bender. It can be seen as a great resource for opening up a discussion about schizophrenia and mental illness in general. The hospital is a safe environment to take a break from the stresses of life that can be even more detrimental to a person with a mental disorder. This quality of Alicia is something I admired: standing by and staying committed to the person she loves the most. The story starts with Nash as a student at Princeton University. It follows his journey from where Nash is quite unaware of his delusional schizophrenia, full blown paranoia, to the place where Nash, his wife, and friends are contributing factors to his manageable condition seen in closing.
